Assembly of the cane rod
Never join the rod parts if the plug connections are dirty. If the elements are soiled, clean the ferules and pins with a clean cotton cloth. Before assembling the rod parts, make sure that they are dry; never use lubricants on them! Before assembling the rod parts, please note the orientation of the guides. The rod parts must never be adjusted with regard to each other by twisting the assembled ferules. Using both hands, hold the rod parts as close as possible to the plug connection and then join them completely without any use of force. The connection must be tight and without play. Should the connection be loose, or if the pin cannot be inserted into the ferule on about two thirds of its length, the rod should not be used until the problem has been remedied.
On the waterfront
When walking on difficult territory while carrying the assembled rod, always hook the fly into the hook tender provided for this purpose or into the guide ring and pull the fishing line tight. To prevent the rod tip from getting caught in the underbrush and breaking off, hold the rod tip backward as long as you are walking. Flies that are stuck must always be detached by manually pulling on the line, and never by yanking the rod. To ensure a uniform load of the cane during the drill of heavy-weight fish, don’t forget from time to time if possible to turn the rod so that the guides are pointing upward.
After use
Should the rod be dirty, rinse it generously with water and then rub it gently with a cotton rag. To disassemble the rod parts, use both hands (spaced wider than for the assembly) for gripping the parts, and pull them apart without twisting or bending. Be particularly careful when your hands or the cane are wet, as the hands may easily slip on the blank surface and damage one of the guides. Close the ferule with the ferule plug. Immediately after its use, put the rod back into the cloth bag and into the rod tube; this is the only condition for transporting the rod.
Conservation
Before putting it into the rod tube, make sure that the rod is completely dry. DThe rod should never be left in the car while the sun is burning onto its roof. The rod should always be stored in vertical position in the rod shelf, or suspended in the cloth bag, the rod tip pointing upward. Make sure that the rod is stored in a dry and slightly tempered place.
Care and maintenance
To prevent humidity from penetrating into the bamboo, any paintwork defects must be repaired as soon as possible. Soiled cork grips can be cleaned with warm soap water. The metal parts can be restored to the initial gloss with metal polish, as it is for example used for wind instruments. Dull varnish can be freshened up by means of furniture polish. If after the cleaning procedure with metal polish the plug connections are still sticky, the pin can be gently treated using smooth steel wool and metal polish evenly on its entire circumference. When doing this, proceed with utmost caution and check the fit at regular intervals. Don’t forget: too tight may suddenly turn into too lose! Major damages, defective rings, damaged or loose ferules should be repaired by a trained specialist.
